RUGGEDISED is a smart city project funded under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme. It brings together three lighthouse cities: Rotterdam, Glasgow and Umeå and three follower cities: Brno, Gdansk and Parma to test, implement and accelerate the smart city model across Europe. Working in partnership with businesses and research centres these six cities will demonstrate how to combine ICT, e-mobility and energy solutions to design smart, resilient cities for all.

Rotterdam wants to introduce the Heart of South area as its Lighthouse district in which it will implement 13 smart solutions with the aim to achieve maximum energy efficiency and CO2 reduction while looking to have a major social economic impact on job creation, citizen participation and quality of life.
Umeå is a multicultural city, home to some of Sweden’s most educated population, known to be very environmental engaged. Smart city thinking is at the core of the City of Umeå’s overall vision of continued social, economic and environmental sustainable growth.
Glasgow is taking part in the most important transformation in its history: to become one of the most sustainable and smart cities in Europe. Through RUGGEDISED, Glasgow will continue on its journey, transforming from an industrial city to a sustainable, resilient and low carbon city.
Parma’s smart city vision is to accelerate the city’s sustainability and innovation. Thanks to the ground-breaking activities that RUGGEDISED will set in motion, Parma expects to be a model replicator and an inspirational example for other Italian and European mid-size cities.
Brno is a modern, dynamic and fast-growing centre of industry, research and innovation. RUGGEDISED will be a way to make Brno's smart city vision happen through the study and replication of smart solutions from the lighthouse cities. Brno will look into transforming industrial brownfields to create new revitalized districts.
The smart solutions proposed here will be deployed on the ground of replication plans elaborated within the scope of Gdansk´s “Next Economy” proposal and will be implemented in Gdańsk Śródmieście “Downtown” district which is the traditional area of Gdansk, where the old town is located.
